eBay Changes Strategic Advertising Partner

eBay’s long term association with the advertising agency, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of San Francisco has apparently ended and BBDO in New York has been selected as eBay’s marketing agency of record in the United States.

Television advertising, Internet marketing, direct marketing, and print advertising for eBay will now be handled by BBDO.

In a recent statement eBay said that it’s marketing needs have been expanding as the company has grown. eBay stated it spent $455 million on global online and offline marketing programs in 2004. About $250 million of that was spent on U.S. marketing initiatives.

So I guess the message those of us who use eBay both to buy and sell can take home from this change, is that eBay is intent on keeping its’ leading position in online auctions. That’s got to be good news in the context of giving the widest marketplace for both sellers and buyers regardless of whether our interest is in cosmetics collectibles or even Spock’s ears (please see earlier blog!)
