New Data Center for eBay in Phoenix

eBay is paying over $16m to purchase a building in Phoenix in which to set up a new data centre for its online auction service. Computer servers and a small number of staff will be housed in the four-story 141,000 square foot building.

A number of Western US cities competed for the new data center with Phoenix eventually emerging as the winner. Apparently, the building was constructed during the late ‘90s and has been on the market for around four years.

eBay already has three data centers in California and one in Denver. Growth in transaction volumes has led the company to expand its data capacity and also to make use of multiple distributed locations as a disaster recovery contingency in the event of earthquakes and other possible events.

eBay operates on a global basis with over 130 million users across the world and this new data center will help ensure continuity of eBay’s internet services.
