eBay UK Buying Gumtree.com?

As yet unconfirmed reports indicate that eBay, the world’s largest online auction site may be acquiring the online classified advertising company Gumtree.com to further boost its local country sites network.

Gumtree was established in London early in 2000 and was initially designed as a community site to help people planning a move to the Capital to find accommodation, and employment.

Over the last 5 years, Gumtree.com has expanded enormously both in terms of it’s geographic coverage and also the range of services, which now include tax and financial advice, “stuff for sale” and partner-finding.

There are local UK Gumtree.com sites focused on Brighton, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Guildford, Manchester, and Reading along with other international sites in Australia, Eire, France, New Zealand and South Africa.

It’s quite easy to see the principal business synergies between
eBay Auction UK , eBay Shopping UK and the Gumtree.com operation in terms of market reach and complimentary service portfolios. The entrepreneurial nature of eBay and Gumtree should make for a harmonious integration of the businesses – and that’s got to be good news for all those of us who use eBay on a regular basis and love to see continued expansion.
