Man Gets “Burned” as eBay Toast Auction Falls Through

A slice of toast carved with a drawing of runaway US bride-to-be, Jennifer Wilbanks was sold on eBay for over $15,000.

But now the seller feels “burned” because the buyer is refusing to pay up. The auction, which drew national attention in the US, opened with a bid of just over $1.00 on 1 May and rapidly climbed to a winning bid of $15,400 from a California man.

Apparently, the seller was planning to hand over the toast on national television, but was shocked to find that the buyer had gone back on the deal and could no longer be contacted.

Where it not for the fact that the seller was intending to donate money from the auction to charity, I guess not many people would feel very sympathetic. If you take a look at the photo of the toast, the carving was not even a very good likeness, so the term “value for money” is not one that springs to mind in this case.

The story does illustrate a point though. It can sometimes be tempting to go over the top on price in the heat of bidding on eBay. If you take a little time to properly research market prices and use
search eBay UK or your local eBay country site thoroughly then you will find great bargains on eBay.
