Record eBay Interest in Pope’s Old Car

The Volkswagen car that used to be owned by Pope Benedict XVI is for sale on eBay and has broken all records for the auction site by recording almost four million hits.

eBay is reported as commenting, "It was viewed more often than any other item we have ever had on eBay Germany."

The start price for the 1999 Golf was Euros 9,999 but by Monday, bidding had reached over Euros 62,000 and had received more than 130 offers. The auction does not finish until Thursday so the bid price is expected to increase even further.

Apparently, the seller bought the car early this year but did not know at the time that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was the former owner.

Due to the extremely unusual nature of the item, eBay is said to be taking extra precautions to guard against any possibly fraudulent offer, including having all bidders supply their phone number and a copy of their identification card in addition to their eBay ID.
