eBay does not allow its members to use any systems, software or methods that result in fees being avoided. Sometimes we all complain about the cost of selling on eBay, but without eBay many of us would loose out on home businesses or just making a few pounds from selling stuff in the attic.

So it makes good sense to make sure that you stay within the rules because if you don’t then eBay can do a number of things such as:-

  • Cancelling your listing(s)
  • Still charging you even if your listing is cancelled
  • Downgrading or placing limits on your account status
  • Removing PowerSeller status
  • Suspending your account

There is a very good guided tour on the main eBay site and it’s worth visiting. Many inexperienced eBayers have innocently done things which have led to penalties being imposed so take a look and make sure you don’t get caught out. You can get to the main site via this link.

Here are a few things to make sure you avoid:-

  • “Off-eBay Trading” – is where you encourage buyers to purchase the item you have listed without going through the proper eBay transaction process. In other words, using eBay to advertise your items but then not paying them their dues– NOT GOOD.

  • Listing an item with a very low selling price but charging a very large amount for the post and packaging – a ploy often used by offshore sellers and unfair because it not only penalises eBay through lower listing fees but also can lead buyers who don’t read all the details into an unreasonable transaction.

  • Unless you are actually selling a domain name, don’t include a www in the title or subtitle as this will be seen as an attempt to offer to trade outside eBay.

  • You’re not permitted to list catalogues because this would be an inducement to trade “off-eBay” although the listing of old catalogues as collectable items is allowed

As with all these guidance pages, you need to look on the main eBay site for full details.
