Bidding by proxy is a convenient way to let eBay automated
systems look after bidding on your behalf. All you need to do is enter your
maximum bid and let eBay do the rest.
How does it work?
- Go to the
bottom of the item page and enter your maximum bid and hit the “Place
Bid” button. This bid is secret so neither the seller nor other bidders
can see the amount.
- eBay’s software checks your bid amount in comparison with other bids.
- The system
automatically bids on your behalf, but it will only use as much of your
bid price as is needed to keep your bid in the highest position
- But if
another buyer has entered a higher top price then you won’t win. However,
if the maximum price entered by other bidders is lower than you – you win
the item potentially at a price much lower than your maximum bid.
As with all auctions, your maximum bid will have to be equal to
or greater than any reserve price the seller may have set.
You can’t use proxy bidding on Dutch Auctions, but for standard
listings, this system really does help make sure you don’t necessarily have
to sit at your PC continually watching how the bidding is going.
