In the UK, there is very strict regulation concerning lotteries, prize competitions, raffles and similar “chance” activities.

So basically, eBay does not allow sellers to list anything that might be considered to fall into this “chance” category and there are also restrictions on the use of “bonuses” offered as incentives on listings (see below).

We recommend you check on the main eBay site (you can use this link) for precise details about policy in these areas, because if you inadvertently get it wrong, the penalties can include having your listing cancelled, your account being limited or even suspended, fees being forfeited and loss of PowerSeller rank.

eBay has a general guideline that offering bonuses to buyers is an acceptable practice, but there are some specific rules:-

  • Sellers must clearly state in the item listing the precise definition of when a bonus will be given and when it will not be given.

  • So for example if you state that “a DVD will be included, if the sale price for the main item gets high enough” – that is not acceptable. You would need to say that a specific DVD (title etc) will be included if the selling price for the main item reaches at least a specific amount.

You also need to be careful not to include in the listing title any bonuses which don’t have a significant effect on the overall value of the listed item.

This whole area can be quite complex so we do recommend you check all the details on eBay’s main site.
