Want-it-Now

eBay provides an excellent tutorial detailing all the basic information about how, as a new user, you can begin to buy items safely and have fun at the same time. We’ve summarised some of the key points below and recommend you visit the main eBay website – if you follow the link here you’ll be able to search eBay for everything you need to know.

Here are the key stages in becoming a successful eBayer:-

  • Register – you can browse eBay and gain access to most of the wealth of information and item listings without being a registered user, but if you want to buy anything you’ll need to register first. Registration doesn’t cost anything, but you will need to provide eBay with a valid email address and bank details or credit card information so make sure you have these ready.

  • Find – there are two ways to locate the item you want to buy. You can browse through many different categories which have items organised by types and also by themes. But if you know specifically what you’re looking for, then use eBay’s search facility.

  • Review – when you’ve located an item that you might want to buy, take some time to read the listing in detail; not just the item description, but also the seller’s terms for postage, returns etc. Every seller (and buyer) has feedback from people they’ve done business with on eBay – check this out carefully to see what other buyers say.

  • Bid or Buy it Now – there are two main types of auction. The standard auction lasts for 1, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days and at the end of the auction period, the highest bidder wins. The Buy It Now auction offers you the opportunity to make a purchase instantly by bidding the seller’s asking price.

  • Pay – You’ll need to pay the seller for your purchase and whilst you can usually do this in cash (not recommended) or by cheque, most sellers and buyers prefer the safety of using PayPal (recommended)

Take a look at the eBay tutorial for full details – you’ll also find lots of useful information for new buyers of the help pages.
