Whenever a seller lists an item, it should be allocated to the
most appropriate eBay category to help buyers find the item easily and
quickly. There are around 30 top level categories with each of these being
divided into between 5 and 50 sub categories. Most of these sub categories also
have further sub-divisions so you can browse within very tightly defined
areas.
For example, the main category, Photography, has over 20 sub
categories ranging from Binoculars and Telescopes to Vintage Photography
which in turn is sub divided into:-
- Vintage
Cameras
- Vintage
Accessories
- Vintage
Lenses
- Vintage
Projectors/ Screens
- Other
Vintage Photography
So if you have a clear idea of what category the item you want
will fall into, then restricting your search to a single low-level category can
get the results you want much quicker than starting at the top level, which
will often contain hundreds of thousands of items.
Category-specific searches can be performed in a number of ways:-
- The standard
top-level search facility has a pull-down menu containing all the main
category descriptions so you can select any of these to search.
- Each lower
level of category search includes pull-down menus that allow you to
navigate up or down the categories to make your search narrower or wider
or even skip to a completely different category.
- To help
you fine-tune your category searches even further, the left-hand bar
includes tick boxes to select items within particular distances and advanced
search offers even more customisable options.
