When you list an item, it’s important to select a category that
is most appropriate, since this will help potential buyers to find your item quickly.
Take some time to look at similar items and which categories they
are listed in. A little research prior to listing the item will assist you in
selecting the best category.
Here are a few hints:-
- Try to think
like a potential buyer – perhaps your first choice of category is not
the best one. For example, there is a “clocks” sub category in two main
categories – one for antique clocks in “Antiques & Art” and one for
modern clocks in “Home & Garden”.
- Consider several
possible categories before selecting the one or two you think best.
- Use the
eBay search facility to find similar items to yours and make a note of the
category they are listed in. Use a number of related keyword searches to
check if some categories are more active than others or have more or
less competition.
- Inspect
the bid numbers, prices and page-view counters for similar item listings
in different categories. Focus on the categories where other people have
successful listings (ie their item sells for a
price that you think is a good one.)
- You can
list your item in two categories as a means of reaching a wider buying
audience.
You do need to make sure your item is listed in an appropriate category.
In other words, don’t try to “stand out from the crowd” by listing your item
in, for example, golf equipment if you are selling an iPod
even though golfers may use iPods. eBay does check on this and could move your listing.
