When you first register with eBay, you choose a unique
identification (ID) which becomes your “nickname” and is used by eBay and
other members to refer to you, rather than your real name.
Usually, once having selected your ID, it’s a good idea to keep it
for the long term future because this gives “stability” to your reputation on
eBay and this is important for gaining buyers’ and sellers’ trust.
But sometimes existing members will want to change User ID for a number
of valid reasons. Perhaps when you first registered you were selling
cosmetics, so a nickname related to that line of business was a good idea.
But maybe you then changed your main product line to sunglasses, so something
a little different by way of ID would be sensible.
If you do decide to change your ID, be aware of several things:-
- The change
is implemented by eBay immediately and therefore affects your current listings
as well as future ones and this could be confusing for your existing
customers.
- Your
original feedback details are automatically attached to your new User ID.
- For 30
days, the “changed ID” icon will let other eBay members see that you
have recently changed your User ID. After 30 days, any user checking on
your membership history will be able to detect that you have changed IDs
- After 30
days, your old User ID will become available for another member.
- You are
not allowed to change your ID more than once in 30 days.
One of the key factors in making eBay a success, whether you are
a buyer or seller, is trust. So think carefully about the impact changing
your ID will have on other members you have traded with, perhaps repeatedly,
when they see a new name they don’t immediately recognise.
