Whilst eBay is primarily a commercial operation with a charter to
make money, it also has a strong “human side” associated with it, both
internally amongst its’ staff and externally amongst its members.
The eBay community concept is one that encourages honest and open
communication between its members. There are five fundamental values which
eBay states as guiding principles:-
- We believe
people are basically good.
- We believe
everyone has something to contribute.
- We believe
that an honest, open environment can bring out the best in people.
- We
recognise and respect everyone as a unique individual.
- We
encourage you to treat others the way you want to be treated.
All of these basic tenets are fine examples of how, ideally, any
community should work and for the most part, eBay members do abide by these
guiding principles in their commercial dealings as well as when they are
chatting informally with other eBayers on the
community boards.
Be a little careful though, because whilst the vast majority are
honest and reliable, there are few dishonest people in the external eBay
community. That’s why eBay, very sensibly, lays down some very strict rules
and has implemented some very good technology and processes to help ensure
that members’ consciences are backed up by an enforceable and traceable
framework.
