What’s a Compilation Item? Well, typically it will be a CD or electronic download containing, for example games you can play on your PC. But these games will all be available for free on the internet or similar sources. What the seller has done is aggregate these individual games (or information similarly gathered usually from other free sources) into a single source.

So whether or not that constitutes good value is really down to the individual purchaser. Some of these compilation or informational items can be really useful or interesting – others are poor quality and provide little added value.

eBay has a strict policy (please also refer to the main eBay site) such that listings for compilations or information content (whether on CD, in eBooks or other media) must conform with the following rules:-

  • Cross-category information must not be included.

  • Listed is allowed only in the category Everything Else > Information Products.

  • It is not permissible for compilation or information items to be offered as a bonus item.

  • Using brand names or trade names in the listing title is not permitted unless the listing is specifically for an information product originating from the owner of that brand or trade name and which the seller has full rights to re-sell.

  • Keyword Spamming – the excessive use of keywords is not permitted in the description of compilation or information items.

We believe the reason that eBay takes such a firm stance on compilation an informational items is because sellers have historically indulged in keyword spamming (ie inserting duplicate words in titles; using popular brand names which do not relate to the item being sold) and also the risk of legal action from the owners of trademarks whose intellectual property rights have been infringed.
