Everyone who registers on eBay is required to provide contact information which include their name, postal address, email address and telephone number.

It’s important to keep this information up to date because apart from the fact that other members may have valid reasons for getting in touch, eBay can impose penalties such as suspending your account, if emails they send to you bounce.

But privacy of personal information is also a sensitive issue for most of us and so to help protect the contact information of all its’ members, eBay imposes a number of rules about when your personal information can be made available to other members.

Contact information for eBay members can be obtained only if they are directly involved in your current transactions or transactions occurring in the recent past. Here are some examples:-

• A seller can request the contact information for all bidders on one of their active listings.

• On completion of an auction, the seller will be automatically notified with contact details for the winning buyer and can request further information such as postal address if this has not been supplied by the buyer.

• Requests can be placed by bidders for a seller’s contact information during a current active listing and also in a finished listing where they are the successful bidder

There are also some other circumstances in which you can request contact information for another member:-

• The buyer cannot contact the seller via eBay email but has a question relating to an item’s description or other relevant data.
• A seller needs to verify a bidder by phone.
• A buyer or seller wishes to resolve a dispute related to a listing.
