eBay is the world’s largest online auction marketplace and it also has more shops within it’s virtual malls than any other internet shopping portal.

But it’s more than just a website – eBay is a community of like-minded people who can not only trade between themselves, but also join in many different discussion groups and workshops to learn more about eBay, to exchange ideas, or to just chat about their favourite hobbies and pastimes.

If you want to buy or sell something on eBay, the first thing you’ll need to do is register – there is no charge and you can get to the main eBay UK site via our link. When you register, you’ll need to have your email address handy and also bank or credit card details – don’t worry, eBay is careful to keep all of your personal information private and secure.

You will also need to select a user name (your user ID on eBay) and a password.

When you’ve completed the registration process (which will only take a few minutes) you should take a few more minutes to read through three or four guides from the main eBay Help pages (you can also search this site for the same subjects using Google below)

The recommended initial reading at eBay is:-

  • How do I find the items I want? – there are two main ways of doing this – all items on eBay are allocated to categories such as consumer good or arts and crafts and you can browse through these – or you can use eBay search to quickly sift through many thousands of listings for items that have the descriptions you’re looking for

  • How do I place a bid? – bidding on eBay is much the same as bidding in an auction room. When you’ve found an item you want, just scroll down to the bottom of the listing page and enter the maximum amount you are prepared to bid. Then you can keep a track on how things go and decide whether to place a higher bid or try for something else.

  • How do I sell my items? – most people start their eBay “apprenticeship” by buying some items. That way, you become familiar with the way eBay works and how things are done. Signing up to be a seller is easy, just select the sell tab on the main eBay page and follow the instructions.

  • Why is eBay safe? – eBay provides many checks and safeguards to make sure that internet fraud is minimised and that buyers and sellers operate within a supervised environment. The eBay community is also self regulating and the “feedback” facility makes sure you can quickly and easily find out what other members think of sellers and buyers.
