The eBay Checkout Procedure is designed to make the process of completing a sale and purchase as simple and straightforward as possible by leading both the buyer and the seller through a series of steps.

  • Step 1 - Commence Checkout. Listings that use Checkout will display a Checkout button on the listing page at the end of the auction, or when Buy it Now has been selected. There are also links to Checkout on your My eBay page and also in the automated email sent by eBay to notify you that the auction has finished.

  • Step 2 – On entering the Checkout page, you will be asked to type in your address for postage, which can be saved so you don’t have to re-type it each time you make a purchase. Your address is automatically sent to the seller.

  • Step 3 – Amount due for Payment. Usually, the seller will have entered payment details for standard postage on the listing with optional additions for insurance or special delivery and eBay calculate the total for you based on the basic standard option. You can use the "ask seller for total" hyperlink if you would like a non standard postage option.

  • Step 4 – Payment Method. If you are using the automatically calculated total due for payment, or have now received the total price including special postage, you can select which payment method to use from the options the seller detailed in their listing. PayPal allows immediate payment through Checkout and this is also the safest way to pay sellers. If you use another payment method, eBay will email your address and any message you wish to include to the seller and will show you the seller’s address to which payment should be sent.

  • Step 5 - The Checkout Summary is available from both the listing page and from My eBay so you can easily check on the current status of your transaction. You’ll be reminded if anything else needs to be done, including leaving feedback when your item has been received.
