One of the most frequent reasons that buyers leave negative feedback for sellers is due to items being damaged or even lost in the postal system. So it’s well worth taking a little extra time and care to make sure that items are properly packaged.

Here are a few tips:-

  • If you have a large item or are sending multiple items to one buyer, use a strong corrugated cardboard box designed for use in the postal service.
  • Individual items should be separately wrapped with a protective cushioning such as bubble-wrap before placing them with other items in a box.
  • For small items, a padded envelope is usually best, but if you’re sending delicate items, remember that the envelope may end up at the bottom of a sack full of heavier items so extra protection might be a good idea.
  • Make use of parcel tape that is around 3 inches wide – sellotape and masking tape just isn’t strong enough to seal a large package.
  • Recent surveys by the postal services revealed that a package with a computer printed label was far less likely to get delayed in transit than a hand written label, which might be hard to read.
  • Include a packing slip with your item with your name and address, just in case the buyer needs to return your item.

The main eBay site has a very good section in the Help pages about packing special items such as tyres, metal items and large, heavy, or difficult-to-handle goods. You can get to eBay UK via our link page.

Remember too that the Post Office and other carriers have rules regarding their services, so if you are unsure about what these are then it’s worth checking on their websites.
