When you register to join eBay as a trading member, you are asked to provide contact information, including your name and address.

As a means of verifying your identity, eBay will also need to have on file, either your debit/credit card details, or your email address if this is issued by a company, a registered educational establishment or similarly verifiable source.

This identity verification process helps make sure that eBay is a safe place to buy and sell items because the true identity and contact details for all members are known to eBay. Your credit/debit card is used for identification purposes only – there is no charge for joining eBay although there are, of course fees if you sell an item or make use of certain other add-on services.

eBay has a strict Privacy Policy (you can read this on the main eBay site – here is a link that will take you there) and all sensitive information is encrypted using SSL software, which is the Internet Industry standard for protecting transmitted data.

If your credit/debit card was rejected when you used it to verify your identity then:-

  • Check that you entered the card number correctly.
  • The address you gave to eBay must be the same one for your credit/debit card.
  • Your credit/debit card account must be in good standing – i.e. you are not blocked from using it by the provider.
  • Some credit/debit cards have a block on internet use.
  • Make sure that newly issued cards have been verified/activated.
