eBay is maintained as a safe place to trade on the internet because the verified identity of all members is known to eBay. That’s why you need to be a registered user on eBay before you are allowed to buy any item or list one of your own for sale.

The registration process costs nothing and is simple and quick to use, but you will need to have some information to hand. All the personal information you provide to eBay is kept secure and private. If you’d like to register on eBay, you can use this link to get to the eBay UK website.

The Registration form asks for your full name, home address, email address and a contact telephone number.

Make sure the email address is one you can access straight away because when you register, eBay will immediately send you an email. This contains instructions so you can complete the registration process.

Every eBay member has a unique User ID and it is this “nickname”, rather than your real name, which appears on listings or when you place bids. Try to think of a name which you will not easily forget and which maybe tells others something about your interests or hobbies. If you have difficulty finding a name which is unique, eBay will help out by prompting you with some alternatives that are not being used by other members.

Before you can submit your registration details, you will need to key in the four strange-looking letters or numbers you see at the bottom of the registration page. These numbers are designed so that they can only be read by humans and are there to help make sure that automated registrations (perhaps for fraud purposes) are prevented.

If your registration email does not arrive, first check your “spam” box – sometimes genuine emails can be filtered out by your service provider. You can also try registering again, and if that fails, contact eBay customer support via their Help Pages.
