Whenever you list an item for sale or you make a bid on an item
you want to buy, it is not your real name that appears on eBay – a “Nickname”
is used instead. This helps protect your identity from theft as well as
helping to preserve your privacy.
The “Nickname” is more properly known as the User ID and when you
register on eBay, you’ll need to choose a unique User ID that you are
unlikely to forget. It’s also a good idea to make your User ID something that
will give other members an idea of you hobbies, interests or perhaps the
category of items that you like to buy or sell:-
- You could
use one or more words that highlight your favourite things to collect; such
as mantle_clock_man
- Or you
could use the place where you live to let other members easily spot your
location as well as your interests (football in this case); perhaps Southampton_Saint would be good.
If the ID name you choose is already being used by another eBay
member, the eBay system will prompt you with a selection of unique
alternatives.
There are some rules about user IDs:-
- You can
use any letter (a-z), number (0-9), as well as symbols you will find on
your keyboard (except those listed below)
- The ID must
contain at least two characters, although in practice most people use
anywhere between 6 and 10 characters.
- Spaces and
tabs are not allowed.
- You must
not include words that are obscene, profane, or hateful.
- You may
not use email addresses (eg user22@thiscompany.net)
or website URLs (eg johnsshop.co.uk)
- The symbols
&, <, @, and > are reserved and cannot be used in the ID.
- Only one underscore
"_" is allowed at a time ie “__” is
not permitted.
- You can’t
use a full stop “.”, a hyphen “-“ or an underscore "_" as the
first character
- "eBay", in isolation, or in conjunction with
other characters, is not permitted unless you are an eBay employee.
- The letter
"e" followed by numbers (rather than other letters) is not
allowed as this is a reserved combination.
You can change your user ID (but not more often than once in
thirty days), although fellow eBayers will come to
recognise your ID and want to do business with you again and again. So take
some time to pick an ID that is likely to last you for the long term future.
