The eBay marketplace is a safe place to do business on the internet for a number of reasons. One of the key factors is that all eBay members have their contact details registered with eBay and have an unique user identification (ID) which other members can use to examine the record of feedback comments – their reputation on eBay as a buyer and a seller.

Often an eBay member will choose a user ID that reflects the type of product they sell – for example an ID of georgian_clock_specialist1805 is a pretty clear indication that antique clocks is their main area of specialisation. But if they decided to change focus to become a fishing tackle dealer, then a change of used ID might be sensible.

As a buyer or seller, it's always important to gain as much information as possible about your eBay trading partner and so tracking the feedback comments given to a particular ID is crucial. Feedback is transferred if a user changes his or her user ID and whilst there is usually a genuine reason for this, it’s helpful to know that a recent change has occurred.

eBay automatically places a "changed ID" icon adjacent the User ID to let you know that this eBay member has changed their ID at sometime within the last 30 days.

This change of ID notification is shown immediately on all listings which are currently active as well as on the member’s feedback record.

Don’t get alarmed if you see this icon appearing for a member you want to trade with, but it’s always worth doing a little bit of extra investigation of their feedback comments just to make sure they are not trying to hide anything. If you’re still unsure, use eBay’s “ask seller a question” function to get some background on the change of ID.
