When you place a bid on an item you wish to purchase, you can enter the maximum amount that you are willing to pay. The eBay system will then automatically place bids on your behalf (this is known as proxy bidding) to keep you as the highest bidder (unless someone else places a higher maximum bid).

 

This automatic bidding process increases the amount of your bid in increments that are just sufficient to outbid the next highest bid from a competing member.

 

The actual amount of the bid increment depends on the current price that an item has attained according to the sliding scale below:-
