If you buy an item from an overseas eBay seller, it’s usually a good idea to make sure that the item is insured for loss or damage in transit. You should ask the seller to insure the item if the carrier they use does not automatically provide cover.

Don’t forget that the cost of post and insurance from overseas to the UK can add considerably to the price of your item, so it’s best to communicate with the seller before you bid and confirm what these costs will be.

If you are a UK seller and are sending an item overseas, probably the best service is the Royal Mail’s

International Signed For®, which provides proof of posting as well as proof of delivery. Deliveries can be made to almost everywhere in the world and costs are relatively low. Delivery to most common destinations such as the USA and mainland Europe take between 3 and 10 days.

Packages are given a unique 13 digit reference number which you can use with the Royal Mail “track and trace” function to get a status report on where your package is currently.

International Signed For costs £3.30 for each item in addition to normal postage charges. This provides insurance cover to a maximum of £30.00 compensation if the item is lost or damaged in transit.

If you send valuable items such as jewellery, CDs, DVDs or consumer electronics, then it’s worth opting for the additional insurance service. This costs £1.50 to insure for compensation up to £500 in the event of loss or damage.
