Collecting autographs has been a popular hobby for many years (even before eBay!). But you should be careful when buying or selling autographed items on eBay because there are forgeries about.

Dishonest people have been known to spend long hours perfecting the public signatures of celebrities and then, using nothing more than a pen and perhaps a plain sheet of paper, they can create a convincing forgery in seconds.

If you want to sell an autograph or autographed item on eBay, it’s important that you observe eBay’s Policy in this area. Please visit the eBay website and read their Help pages on autographs – here is a link which will help you get to the eBay UK website.

When you list an autograph, it’s strongly recommended that your item description should include:-

  • A scanned image of the autographed item, preferably with as large a size as possible and using the highest resolution supported by eBay.

  • Detailed description including all relevant information you have about the autographed item, such as when it was signed, at what event, if you are the original owner.

  • Details about a certificate of authenticity that you have for the autograph.

  • Your policy on refunds if the autograph is subsequently proven not to be, or probably, not authentic.

Bear in mind that certificates of authenticity can sometimes be called into question, so it is strongly recommended that before selling an autographed item on eBay, you have reasonable proof that the issuer of the certificate has all the requisite qualifications and authority to make the certification.
