We all receive spam (rubbish, offensive or commercial) email
these days – it’s a fact of life. eBay does not sell
or disclose any member’s contact information to marketing companies, so there
is little chance that a spammer would have acquired your email address
through your trading activities on eBay.
But email addresses are disclosed to other members whenever you
buy or sell an item from them. So there is a possibility that your email
address could “leak out” through this channel. It is,
however against eBay policy for members to use or disclose other members’
contact details in any public internet forum, so that tends to keep a
restraint on your details being made available to spammers.
Only your User ID is available for public view on eBay, so it is
not usually possible for spammers to use automated techniques to “harvest”
your real contact details. However, if you have included part of your email
address in your user ID, it is possible that automated internet robots could
collect this and convert it to your real email address using a variety of
algorithms.
If you are a high volume seller or buyer on eBay, your in-box can
fill up very quickly with automated email notifications from eBay and PayPal.
These automated notifications will send you an email every time
you list an item, change details, make a sale, receive a payment, make a
payment or send an invoice.
So you can use Notification Preferences in My eBay to opt out of
one or more of the automatic email notification routines - just choose the “Change
My Notification Preferences” in the “Personal Information” area and you can
decide which to receive.
