eBay is one of the safest places to buy or sell on the internet because of its’ technical security features and the fact that all members’ identities and contact information are known to eBay. Please also refer to eBay Help pages for more detailed definitions of Policy – you can follow this link to the eBay UK website.

However, there is no absolute guarantee that fraud will never occur and so eBay operates a number of procedures to help members protect themselves and others against fraud:-

  • All eBay members who make a purchase or sell an item are provided with a quick and easy way to contact their trading partners directly.

  • Any suspicious activity reported by a member or by a law enforcement representative or a trading standards body, is thoroughly investigated by eBay. Members who are found to be in violation of eBay’s policies can have their accounts suspended in addition to other sanctions.

  • PayPal is an eBay company, and the two organisations work closely together to assist buyers and sellers if payment-related problems occur. The formalised processes - “Buyer Complaint”, “Item Not Received” or “Significantly Not as Described” - assist buyers who may have been defrauded by a seller. eBay's “Standard Purchase Protection” scheme can reimburse buyers up to a maximum of £120.00 when a seller does not deliver, or grossly misrepresents an item.

  • The PayPal “Buyer Protection Programme” gives up to £500 coverage for qualified items which have been paid for using PayPal.
