Recently, eBay introduced the concept of buyer activity limits as
a means of helping to reduce the incidence of buyers not paying for items
they had purchased. eBay’s research revealed that
over half of all “Unpaid Items” originated from new members who had a
feedback score under 5.
Sometimes, new users are not fully aware of their commitment to
complete a transaction when they place a bid or use the Buy it Now option. So
to help new buyers act appropriately, eBay’s system automatically monitors
their buying activities by placing volume restrictions on bids and Buy It Now
transactions. If extremely unusual buying patterns are detected, restrictions
may also be imposed.
Some of the factors which will cause the activity limit threshold
to be reached are based on:-
- The number
of winning bids placed within a pre-determined timescale.
- The
financial value of winning bids within a pre-determined timescale.
- The volume
and nature of feedback received is analysed to detect shill feedback (i.e.
false feedback from friends or associates).
- The number
of items which the buyer has paid for, and through which payment
methods, and to which sellers, is analysed.
It is rare however for limits to be imposed and most new buyers are
completely unaware that any restrictions exist. Buyers who have a verified and
“in good standing” credit card on file with eBay are exempt from limits on
their activity.
