In January 2005, eBay UK made revisions to its
policy regarding the use of links by sellers in their listings. Please see
the eBay Help pages for a fuller definition of these policies – the eBay site
can be accessed via our linkpage.
The following paragraphs provide our interpretation of what
sellers are allowed, and not allowed to do in relation to links which lead
off the eBay site:-
- The eBay
User Agreement only allows listings to contain "...text
descriptions, graphics, pictures and other content relevant to the sale
of that item." And that policy was expanded to disallow links to any
page which contains any items for sale through a medium other than an
official eBay website.
- eBay’s
position is that The View Item page is reserved for the description of a
specific item and that general business advertisements which promote
other goods or services are not permitted, as this is detrimental to
other sellers who do not promote off-eBay activities and therefore
detrimental to the eBay community as a whole.
- eBay
defines a link to be “any mechanism” that will take a user away from the
eBay site. Hyperlinked text, photographs, images, logos and icons are
all included in the “mechanisms”, but simply including a static text (such
as www.myownwebsite.com) could be also deemed to be included in the link
ban.
- Links from
the listing page to the Home page of your own website are forbidden unless
the Home page contains only additional description information about the
listed item. Even here, there seems to be a grey area because the User
Agreement says that the item description must be contained within the
View Item Page.
You are allowed to have one link to a page with further definition
or information specifically relating to the listed item, together with links
to your other eBay listings and a single link to your About Me page which may
contain links to your own website, but you are not allowed to directly promote
any off eBay transaction.
