In overall terms, eBay’s policy is that so-called “Choice Listings” are not allowed and any that are detected will be ended, with the insertion fee being automatically credited. We recommend that you go to eBay’s Help pages for a full definition of their policy on this subject. Here is a link that will take you there.

So what is a “Choice Listing”? It’s when a seller gives buyers a choice from a range of non-identical items and eBay does not allow this due to the opportunity for fee circumvention with item sales being made “off-eBay”.

There are, however, two exceptions to the “Choice Listing” rule:-

  • Listings such as Dutch auction, fixed price format or shops which offer multiple quantities are allowed, provided the items are identical except for their colour. This is conditional on the seller being able to supply the entire quantity of any colour, even if all successful bidders make the same colour choice. Sellers may not make statements in the listing such as "First choice of colour goes to the high bidder."

  • Provided that the seller does not make any additional charges, listings that offer custom-made items or items that may need re-sizing (such as rings or clothes) are permitted. However, it is not allowed to offer a choice in the title of multiple books, DVDs, CDs or similar, including the choice of sizes in clothes or footwear (other than custom-made).
