eBay has a strict policy regarding misuse of the “Contact an eBay Member” service which allows eBay members to communicate with each other using the eBay Email Forwarding System rather than conventional email.

eBay provides this “internal” email service because of the need for members to have rapid communication without the risk of delays and disruption sometimes caused by spam filters and other problems with generalised internet email services.

Features including "Contact an eBay Member" as well as "Ask Seller a Question", provide a channel of communication which could be misused or abused and eBay imposes a strict policy which, if breached could result in account suspension for the offending member.

Examples of misuse of the email forwarding system include:-

  • Soliciting another member to trade “off eBay”.
  • Soliciting another member to provide inaccurate or misleading feedback comments.
  • The sending of “Spam” messages for the purpose of commercial gain.
  • Sending “Spam” messages in an attempt to disrupt another member’s auction.
  • Using profane, obscene or otherwise offensive language.

If you are the victim of misuse of the email forwarding system, you can click on the "report" link in the offending email and this will allow you to report the matter to eBay. You can also get further information from the main eBay site Help pages. This link will take you to eBay UK.
