Up until recently, few people knew what a mod chip, game enhancer or boot disc was – and even now, these are not well known terms. But they not allowed to be sold on eBay, so we thought it might be useful to provide a bit more information.

A mod chip is an electronic chip (a small computer component) that can added to the PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PSX or PS One games consoles and will probably also soon be available for other similar devices. It enables the potentially illicit use of Import Games, and CD-R/DVD-R copy backups to play games, in addition to the so-called “Homebrew Software” and legitimate Open Source software applications.

Whenever the games console is powered up or you load a different CD, it goes through a “Boot Sequence” which checks the loading data on the CD. The purpose of the mod chip is to bypass the standard start-up routine by injecting the “correct” boot information.

Devices of this type that enable the playing of potentially illicit backup copies or import versions of video games are not allowed to be listed on eBay because they encourage infringement of software copyright and intellectual property rights.

So eBay’s policy (please use this link to go to the eBay UK website for further details) is that any listing which offers mod chips, boot discs or game enhancers will be ended early and multiple violations could result in permanent account suspension.
