When computer manufacturers build their hardware, they often include purpose-designed software either to enable basic use of the machine or to provide additional program functions.

This software is known as OEM (which stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer), or “bundled software” and is provided as an integral part of the overall package when a new computer is purchased.

There is usually a software licence with the new computer which prohibits this OEM/bundled software from being resold, unless it is included with the computer hardware as a complete transaction.

eBay’s policy (please also visit eBay and read the Help pages – a link is here) is that OEM or bundled software may not be listed unless it is part of a complete package which includes the hardware to which the OEM software relates.

If you are unsure about whether software that you want to sell falls into the OEM/bundled category, we recommend that you also read the following related items which are on the main eBay website:-

  • Overview of Prohibited & Restricted Items
  • Academic Software
  • Media Downloads
  • Media Recordings
  • Beta Trial Software
