Whilst eBay is not in a position to regulate most email communication, the company nevertheless encourage all their members to adopt a courteous and respectful approach when sending email. Any member who receives offensive or unwelcome email from another member is requested to notify eBay or, in certain circumstances, the police.

You can use this link to go to eBay and visit the Help pages for more information about offensive emails, but here is a summary of the key issues and suggestions:-

  • You can block the incoming email from specific senders or consign it straight to the “spam” box by using the standard features available from most email system providers.

  • You can report the sender to their Internet service provider and if the email is judged to be inappropriate, the service provider has all necessary powers to take appropriate action.

  • If any email you receive makes you fear for your safety or the safety of others, please report the incident to the police.

In addition to the general actions above, if you receive offensive or unwelcome email from another eBay member that falls into any of the following categories, then you should immediately notify eBay:-

  • If the email contains a threat of bodily harm.

  • If the eBay messaging system “Contact an eBay Member” is misused, for example by threatening to leave negative feedback unless you pay extra for an item you bid on.

  • If you receive scamming emails which impersonate eBay and ask for personal information, passwords or bank details.
